According to the American Cancer Society, over 73,000 people will be diagnosed with bladder cancer this year. In fact, bladder cancer is the 5th most commonly diagnosed cancer in the U.S. - 4th among men (after prostate, lung and colon) and 11th among women. In light of these statistics and the impact on those fighting the disease as well as their family and friends, the Carolinas Bladder Cancer Fund was started in 2012 by 5MPOWER, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering other non-profits.

5MPOWER has worked with leaders from the Levine Cancer Institute to identify needs in the area of bladder cancer treatment, including the need for additional research. The Carolinas Bladder Cancer Fund supports innovative bladder cancer research programs at Levine Cancer Institute. This research is focused on gene expression studies designed to identify predictive factors for bladder cancer and potential targets for directed therapy, development of a bladder cancer tumor bank, and related research efforts.

Dr. Kris Gaston, a Urologic Oncologist with Levine Cancer Institute, says "the Carolinas Bladder Cancer Fund is helping make a real difference in the future of bladder cancer treatment through truly innovative research and the money donated to fund our research will have a direct impact on cutting-edge breakthroughs in cancer care, which is very exciting."

The fund was launched with an initial gift from 5MPower for $100,000. The goal for the Carolinas Bladder Cancer Fund is $1 million. Every dollar makes a difference! If you would like to contribute to the Carolinas Bladder Cancer Fund, please click on the Make a Donation button on this page.

5MPOWER has also assisted the Levine Cancer Institute in starting a Bladder Cancer Support Group. If you would like to learn about or participate in the Levine Cancer Institute's Bladder Cancer Support Group, please contact Adrian Thornburg (704-446-1345).
