Beneficiaries
Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death in America today, claiming the lives of nearly one million men and women each year. This disease also accounts for almost six million hospitalizations, annually. Locally, The Carolinas Heart Institute at Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) and the Cardiovascular Health & Rehabilitation Program are combining medical expertise, equipment and facilities to address this disease and provide both acute care as well as much needed preventive and rehabilitative care for patients in our community.
To further the growth of vital prevention, rehabilitation, and education programs in this area, Carolinas HealthCare Foundation established the Cardiovascular Health & Rehabilitation Fund. Support from the Cardiovascular Health Fund enhances the level of care for cardiac patients, positioning CMC as a leader in the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease.
By supporting the Cardiovascular Health & Rehabilitation Fund, you play a key role in upholding our level of excellence. Whether you are a grateful patient, family member, or other friend, you can make a difference. The Fund receives contributions through its charitable administrator, Carolinas HealthCare Foundation.
Heart of a Champion
New for 2010! Charlotte-Mecklenburg high school students participating in Cupids Cup will raise funds to benefit the Heart of a Champion Program.
Heart of a Champion is a free sports-specific health screening and educational program for Charlotte-Mecklenburg student-athletes. The screenings include a review of the athlete’s medical history, a sports-specific medical and musculoskeletal exam, a thorough heart exam, and a vision test.
The program is unique because of the heart screening, where all student-athletes receive an electrocardiogram (ECG), which traces the heart’s electrical activity. They also receive an echocardiogram, which is an ultrasound of the heart. A heart screening is necessary because traditional sports screenings may not reliably detect heart conditions that could affect an athlete’s ability to participate in sports.
